Where are the Pictures?

In Elder Hackleman's letter, he said he was cutting it short so he would have time to upload some pictures.  I'm not sure what happened, but we never did get any pictures from Peru.  Hopefully next Monday we will.

Elder Hackleman's 1st Week in Peru

Hola Familia!!!!

I´m in Peru!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so awesome! My companion rocks! His name is Elder Kitchens. He´s a gringo like me! He´s from California but recently moved to Ogden. We are best buds. We are both going to the U when we get home. It´s decided. Haha We had our first baptism yesterday! Her name is Stephanie. She´s 18. She is the steriotypical Perfect investigator. She understood and believed everything we taught her. I am so excited to see how much she progresses because she already has so much!!

Let me tell you a little about the city of Lima. They don´t believe in the use of trashcans. The streets, the sidewalks, and the few places where there is grass, are literally lined with trash. haha That isn´t the craziest part. They have stray dogs like you would not believe. There is literally a stray dog to every one or two people here. They just run around and eat whatever they can find in the trash. Some of them are really mean too. My companion has already been bit since he´s been here. I haven´t yet (Knock on wood). Everytime we see some big ones though. He like slows down and backs up and I just walk right at it. I like to think that its because I´m big and tough and he´s a wimp, but its really because I am naive and he knows better I think. Haha but don´t worry. Everytime I do that, the dogs scammer off. I think its because they dont see people my size very often here. Well that´s all for this week so I have enough time to upload you a couple pictures real fast. I love you all! Thanks for your letters!!

Mother's Perspective

It's official, Monday May 20th, Elder Hackleman flew from Salt Lake City to Lima, Peru.  While he was in the airport in Salt Lake, he was able to call home and give us an update.  He is doing very well, although he had a bit of a cold.  His MTC companion was flying to Peru with him along with 35 other missionaries.

He said his time in the MTC was very busy, but he learned a lot and knew that his attitude was a very important element in the work.  There were positive missionaries and negative ones, and it really makes a difference to be positive.

He also told me he wasn't sure what, if any, contact he would be able to make as far as letting me know he arrived safely.  He said, "Mom, if you get a call, then you know something is wrong.  If you don't get any calls, then you know that I arrived safe and sound and all is well."

I have to say, coming from a mom who can't sleep a wink when my children are out of the house, even for prom or something, until they are safely home, I was very comforted by this.  I truely didn't worry one single bit.  Monday night, I went right to sleep without a moments thought about whether or not Jaren made it safely to Peru.  I knew he was in the Lords hands and all would be well.

Imagine my shock, when Tuesday evening I received a call from Peru.  Oh, no, this can't be good.  My blood started rushing.  On Tuesday evening, May 21st, Elder Hackleman's mission president's wife called.  Jaren's words were rushing through my head.  Luckily he was wrong.  They do call when all is well.  Thank goodness.  She proceeded to tell me that he did not have access to a computer right now because there were 35 new missionaries who came in at the same time and the mission office simply did not have enough computers to accommodate that many missionaries to send of emails.  She had all the missionaries write a quick letter to their families and then give them to her so she could mail them off as soon as possible.  They are coming snail mail through the Peruvian post office, or maybe pouch mail, but either way it will be a while before it makes it here.

Elder Hackleman was assigned a companion, but I can't remember who she said it was.  When she called I was driving down the road so I couldn't take notes:)  I can't even remember if she said whether or not the companion was from Peru.  I think he is from the states.  Jaren didn't think he would ever have an American companion, but I'm guessing with all the extra missionaries in the field right now, that is not the case.  Either way if fine with him.

She did say that she was very impressed with his spiritual preparation and knew he was going to be a great missionary.  She said, they treat all the missionaries as part of the family, so they will do all they can to make sure they are safe and protected.  Yeah!

I am now starting to get into the rhythm of being a missionary mom.  I know there have been hundreds and thousands of missionary moms go before me, but somehow, I really wasn't prepared for how much it would affect me.  I just need to get used to the new normal for us.

Elder Hackleman's Departure Day April 10, 2013

We are trying to put on a happy face, when we are feeling sad about missing Jaren.

Jaren's airline Ticket is in his hand

Elder Hackleman is on the plane waiting to depart Omaha, Nebraska for Salt Lake City

Grant watches Jaren's plane out the window.

Just because it is 5:30 in the morning, doesn't mean the boys aren't hungry:)

There goes the plane, bye Jaren for 2 years!

I didn't realize how hard it would be to see Jaren go.
It's a good thing we have good friends who gave me a missionary mom survival kit.
This was just what the doctor ordered!

Dear Elder Punkin Sonshine,

So the family had a great week. We only had one injury!!! Grant was playing basketball at school on the low rims. He went to dunk it and the ball hit the back of the rim and (we think) dislocated his finger and then immediately went back into place. It's been a week and it is still swollen and black and blue. He can bend it without any pain, so we know it's not broken. We found out that Lance Christian is home! That went by fast. Can you imagine he is coming home to a new baby brother!!

We had a great Mother's day. Saturday we planted raspberries, black berries and strawberries for your mom's present. Seth got her a movie-style popcorn popper from Bed, Bath and Beyond. Grant spoke in Sacrament and did a great job! He was nervous, but did awesome.

We need photos!!! What's been going on? Do you need anything before you leave?

Today's lesson is on baptizing in the wild:

Repeat after me...

Buenas noticias:  Usted bautizó a siete investigadores en el río local.

Malas noticias:  Usted perdió cinco de ellos en la corriente fuerte.

In English...

Good News:  You baptized seven investigators in the local river.

Bad News:  You lost five of them in the strong current.

Helaman's stripling warriors

Elder Hackleman’s response to Bloom where you are planted photos.
Awesome!!! They look way better than I thought they would! I am sending some pics to dads email for ya'll. What's the update on the NBA playoffs just for curiosity's sake? Hows the reigning MVP doing? haha I hope Grants finger gets better. ICE ICE ICE! Thanks for all the letters mom and happy late mothers day!!!!! I was thinking about the army of Helaman yesterday and had an epiphany. I don't know if it was the Spirit or just me making connections but listen to this.
Our family is exactly like the army of Helaman. If we would have been lamanites during the time of Helaman, Dad would have buried his sword and vowed never to raise it again. I know he would because he has. He gave up his life for what he knew was right. You would have been the mother to teach us how to live righteous, gospel filled lives just like those in the Book of Mormon because that is what you do now. And because of both of your examples, I know that all four of us boys would be on the battlefield fighting for what's right. That is what I am doing. Serving a mission is a fight. It is a fight against the adversary and it is a fight that we already know the winners of. I am so grateful to have you both as parents and to have 3 Stripling warrior brothers to fight alongside me. Happy Mother's Day again Mom. I love you all so much.

Bloom Where You Are Planted!

Beautiful Mother's Day Flowers!  Thank You Elder Hackleman, for your service last fall that brings me flowers today.  It is the parable of the seed at work.

Mother's Day Flowers

Elder Hacklerman, and his little brother Grant planted bulbs in the fall.  Now on Mother's Day, while Elder Hackleman is in the MTC, his flowers are blooming.  I can't think of a better Mother's Day gift!

Hey momma!!!!! I LOVED the package you sent me! Thank you so much! I love getting the dear elders from you too catching me up on everything. My week has been great! The spanish is getting there. I told dad about the phone call status. I can't call on mothers day in the MTC but I will be able to call you if/when I get re-assigned. Otherwise I'll call ya in the airport on the way out but I'll definitely let you know what my status is when I know. I got the cutest package from the laws this week! I need to write them back but let them know how much I loved the cookies and pictures. I love you mommy!!!! I hope the lessons with that investigator are going well. Seriously, read Preach my Gospel as much as you can. It is so amazing and is built entirely for investigators. I am glad ya'll had a good time with pappa and aunt sherlene! I bet the brothers are excited to get out of school! tell them how much I love them. We had a sweet devotional last night given by a former philadelphia eagle tight end!!!!! It was so awesome! He played for BYU then went to play for Andy Reid. He served his mission in Taiwan. His name is Bret Lewis. Check him out sometime! I love you so much and pray for you every day!

Dear Elder Punkin Sonshine,

I hope you don't mind me starting my letters that way every time! I know you must be getting tons of emails (especially from your mommy). I just want mine to stand out!! Grandpa Chuck never stopped calling your dad "mouse". I suspect you will hear me call you Punkin Sonshine for a very long time!

So I decided to help you and your comp with some conversational Spanish. I'm going to try to put a little extra lesson in every email.

Today's lesson is on Tracting:

Repeat after me...

Este perro calvo, rabioso está en mi pierna. ¿Cómo bajo de él?

In english it means:  This bald, rabid dog is on my leg. How do I get it off?

Stay tuned for the next lesson!

Dear Dad,

Surprise!!! They changed the MTC schedule because BYU's semester is over so all the mtc teachers are getting switched around. Because of that my P day is now on monday! Dad, Su espanol es muy bien. Haha I showed my companion and he go a kick out of that. We went to the temple today which was awesome. I get to welcome the new district coming in to our zone on wednesday since I'm the zone leader. half of them are going to the alabama birmingham spanish speaking mission where macy is so that's pretty cool! How's the fam? Sounds like you and Nathan have some heavy hitters for home teaching families. That's awesome. Aunt Shirlene and papa seemed pretty excited to see ya'll when i had breakfast with them. I bet that will be a great time =) I miss you! I want you to know that your boy is making you proud though. I am working so hard and have grown so much. The term "return with honor" is taken literally by this guy. I'm already halfway through the MTC. It doesn't look promising that I'll have my Visa by the time I get done. A lot of missionaries are getting reassigned so we'll see. I'm not worried though. I'll get there. Love you!!!!!

Missionary Definition

Missionary, (noun) Someone who leaves their family for a short time, so that others may be with their families for Eternity.

Provo Temple

Another Perspective

Jaren's missionary companion.

The following is parts of a letter written by Elder Richards, (Jaren's companion), to his family and posted on his blog.

So the first day, was pretty cool I got  all set up and it was pretty nice. I actually really like this place. My companion is from Nebraska and is a really cool guy, he played football at SVU, that school that offered me that lacrosse scholarship. He loves to sing all the time...I mean all the time. He's a cool kid though. So I'm in a room with two other guys that are in my district, one is from Idaho and the other is from Australia, he is quite the card and really never stops talking. The weirdest thing about all my roommates is they think that I talk funny, they say my accent is weird..... my accent... That's not something I'm used to hearing... I speak normal, they are the ones that speak funny, not me....

Hmm not that much happens here to be honest, so my teacher served in Alabama and is amazing!! He has taught me so much and does an amazing job of bringing the spirit and teaching! My study ability has grown so much with what he has taught me. Everyone in my district is going to Argentina... everyone but me and my companion, we are the only two we've met that are going to Peru Lima West and only three other elders going to Peru... Quite insane... more on that later.

Okay, so back to those Other Peru Elders. One of them that I've become rather close with came running up to me yesterday and told me that he got is visa and that he was leaving today at 5 am... So really the cool thing is that I could get my visa any day and will be out of here the next day!! Then I'll really be able to share the exciting things that have happened to me, because there will actually be some!!

Jaren's 2nd P-Day

4-25-13

Family!!!!! How are you all???? Mom the living room looks great! haha I recognize the backsplash on the tv stand as well! So remember how I told you I was district leader? yeah the day after I told you that, I got called to be zone leader! How cool is that?! I've only been in two weeks! We had our first TRC as a companionship yesterday which is when real members from the area volunteer to just come in and talk to us and let us give them a lesson. It's sort of like a home teaching or visiting teaching visit but they come to us instead of vice versa. It’s all in Spanish as well of course. So as for my Spanish progress, I can understand about 85 % of what someone says to me if they talk kind of slow. I'm getting to the point where I can speak fairly comfortably in Spanish about the Gospel. I'm still working on every-day conversation Spanish. I am learning so much so fast!!!!! They opened up the MTC field for the first time yesterday since before winter so I got to play soccer! It was SOOO fun to be outside! I got the cutest letters from Sara and Sam and the girls. The girls drew me pictures. It was so cute! Shayna sent me a really sweet letter about how they are all doing and about Tanner and about how Macy is doing in her mission. My Spanish teacher here went to the same mission Macy is in now, Spanish speaking as well. He got home before she went out though of course.

How are you all doing? Yes Grant I got your letter and loved it! How's Seth's concussed head? Is Nathan prepared for the summer of his first high school football experience?? How is school and work going for all of you? Dad....keep working on that Spanish! haha You'll never guess who I saw here at the MTC yesterday. Kristen Nichols! She is going to the Las Vegas Nevada Mission! How awesome is that? She looked great. I also met a sister missionary that is called to serve in the Nebraska Omaha, visitor’s center mission so I made sure she knew a lot of her meals would be spent at our house. She took my name down so she'll keep an eye out for ya! haha

Well I miss you all so much. I love you all. I don't have a lot of time to respond to everything you all send me but I LOVE that you do and I read your Dear Elder letters all the time. I love you so much!

Elder Hackleman

*Till We Meet Again*

Oh yea, and every other missionary in my district including my roommates are going to Resistencia Argentina. The rest of my entire zone which consists of 3 districts my size or larger are going to either Argentina, Mexico, or Washington Spanish speaking haha. We are the only Peruvians in my zone. Also, next week we are supposed to be getting sixteen new missionaries! That's about 2 districts. I will have about 30 or so missionaries under my stewardship!!! Totally awesome. Ok just wanted to give ya another update haha Love ya'll!!
